Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty, plastic surgery on the labia (the “lips” surrounding the vagina), can be performed alone or with vaginoplasty. Surgery can be performed on the labia major (the larger, outer vaginal lips) or the labia minor (the smaller, inner vaginal lips). Labiaplasty changes the size or shape of the labia, typically making them smaller or correcting an asymmetry between them.

Candidates for Labiaplasty

Most women seek cosmetic genital surgery have congenital conditions including intersex or have no underlying condition but experience discomfort or wish to alter their appearance of their genitals. Although there is a normal range for labial appearance, the size, color and shape of the labia varies significantly from person to person and can change after childbirth, aging and other life events.

Recovery After Labiaplasty

After surgery, pain is minimal and patients are usually able to leave the hospital the same day. The reduced labia can be swollen during early post-operative time and often a sanitary pad is recommended to decrease discomfort. Cleansing of the surgical wound site along with a topical antibiotic ointment is also required to help heal the reduced labia. Application is usually advised two to three times daily until skin is healed.

Labiaplasty Results

Labiaplasty creates labia that are aesthetically appealing and eliminates problems including chaffing, chronic wetness and drying or irritation caused by an excessively long labia minora and excessive skin on the clitoral hood. Patients will see a reduction in the size of the labia minora (the inner lips) and the clitoral hood. Also, these areas will no longer extend below the labia majora (the outer, larger labia).

Labiaplasty Risks

Risks are uncommon but occasional complications can include bleeding, infection, labial asymmetry, problems with wound healing, undercorrection or overcorrection. In these rare cases, a revision surgery is required.
